Two Romanian brothers who trafficked vulnerable young women into Spain and forced them into prostitution have been accused of inserting metal balls into their penises in a bid to cause maximum pain to the girls they raped.
A court in Spain has head how people traffickers Cristian and Sebastian Sandulache made their victims sell their bodies at a brothel in the northwest town of Oviedo, where the brothers could make as much as €11,000 ($13,463) a night.
The pair, who are originally from the city of Vaslui in Romania, could be handed a total of 600 years behind bars if they are convicted of a horrific catalogue of violent crimes committed against the young women they exploited.
As well as hearing about the brothers’ penis modification, a court was told how they sliced one woman’s arm off with a samurai sword, and forced others to eat euro banknotes when they failed to make enough money from prostituting themselves.
After commanding a henchman to help the women wash down the notes with water when they struggled to swallow them, the brothers warned them they would be forced to eat coins the next time they failed to bring in enough money from sleeping with clients.
The two men, who are currently on trial for a number of offences including human trafficking, coercive prostitution and money laundering, are said to of have told one debtor they would burn his mother and his grandmother to death.
Another person who owed the pair money is alleged to have been told that his younger sister would be raped if he failed to hand over cash.
Two victims of the brothers’ gang told the court how they were tricked into believing the men were their boyfriends back in their home country, and were conned into travelling to Spain after being promised well-paid work and a higher standard of living.
Once the women arrived in Spain, the men they had thought were their partners turned on them, subjecting then to violet beatings and rape, and forcing them to work as prostitutes and hand over all their takings.
While the brothers’ gang raked in thousands of euros every night, the women would only receive a paltry €200 a fortnight.
Lawyers representing the men’s victims have criticised prosecutors for failing to charge them with rape, despite receiving testimony that the brothers had forced multiple women into non-consensual sex acts.
Despite the gravity of the offences of which the men are accused, they have so far managed to stay out of jail, having handed over some €30,000 in bail money.
Denying all of the charges against them, the Sandulache brothers claim the women who have accused them of wrongdoing are lying, and are simply interested in extracting compensation from them.
The brothers’ trial continues.
